Kellie and Passion, both Cove graduates, first heard about the Cove at school. At first, they were skeptical. But after encouragement from school employees, they decided to give it a try. “It sounded too good to be true,” Kellie said. “But we came and it was awesome.”

“The emotional support we had, that was the biggest thing we needed”

Passion explained that the two friends immediately felt welcome at the Cove. “I just started loving it,” she said. “It got me away from the emotional stuff that was going on. It was a safe place – there was transportation, I was able to study, there were people to help with research projects.”

Passion also said the encouragement she received from volunteers and staff gave her the motivation she needed to finish high school. “The emotional support we had, that was the biggest thing we needed,” she said. “‘You can do it’ goes a long way for someone going through hard things. It really does … Without the Cove, I don’t think I would’ve graduated.” Today, Kellie and Passion are both attending college and working part-time.
